Sans Souci (French). Free and easy, void of care. There is a place so called near Potsdam, where Frederick II. (the Great) built a royal palace.
Enfans Sans Souci. The Tradesmen's company of actors, as opposed to the Lawyers', called "Basochians" (q.v.). This company was organised in France in the reign of Charles VIII., for the performance of short comedies, in which public characters and the manners of the day were turned into ridicule. The manager of the "Care-for-Nothings" (sans souci) was called "The Prince of Fools." One of their dramatic pieces, entitled Master Pierre Pathelin, was an immense favourite with the Parisians. Sans Souci is a town located in Greenville County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 7,836.

Geography


Sans Souci is located at 34°53'15" North, 82°25'8" West (34.887450, -82.418889)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 8.8 km² (3.4 mi²). 8.7 km² (3.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.88% water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 7,836 people, 3,370 households, and 2,082 families residing in the town. The population density is 897.8/km² (2,325.5/mi²). There are 3,705 housing units at an average density of 424.5/km² (1,099.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 80.58% White, 12.63% African American, 0.43% Native American, 1.21% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 3.33% from other races, and 1.68% from two or more races. 7.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,370 households out of which 26.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.2% are married couples living together, 14.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% are non-families. 31.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.89. In the town the population is spread out with 22.5% under the age of 18, 10.9% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 93.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.7 males. The median income for a household in the town is $27,749, and the median income for a family is $32,654. Males have a median income of $26,720 versus $21,010 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,143. 15.7% of the population and 10.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.1% are under the age of 18 and 12.8% are 65 or older.
